A roof gutter packed with fallen autumn leaves

Why fit gutter guards

Gutters fill up fastest on houses under trees. Canberra has plenty: gums that drop leaves and bark all year, and deciduous street trees that drop the lot in autumn.

A guard sits over the gutter and keeps most of that out. The water still gets through, the leaves mostly don't. That means:

  • fewer blockages and less overflow in heavy rain
  • less build-up rotting in the bottom of the gutter
  • a longer gap between gutter cleans

Clean first, then the guard

  1. Tell us about your roof

Tile or metal, single or double storey, and roughly how much gutter. That's what the quote is based on.

  2. Pick a mesh colour

We fit aluminium or steel mesh in a colour to suit your roof.

  3. Our vacuum hose at the edge of a roof gutter, the trailer parked below

    We vacuum the gutters

A full vacuum clean, so nothing old gets trapped under the guard.

  4. We fit the guard

The mesh is fixed over the clean gutter and tucked under the roof edge, along every run we quoted for.

Why the clean comes first, not after

A guard fitted over a gutter that's already half full holds that debris in place. It keeps rotting, it holds water, and it's harder to get out later. These are the kind of gutters we start with, and how they look once we've vacuumed them.

Nothing trapped underneath

The guard goes onto an empty gutter, so there's no old debris sitting under it.

Downpipes checked

We check the downpipes drain while the gutters are open.

Less to clear next time

With the guard on, far less gets into the gutter before its next clean.

Choosing a gutter guard

Gutter guards are mostly a mesh that sits over the gutter and tucks under the edge of the roof. The main differences are what the mesh is made of and how fine it is.

  • Aluminium and steel mesh won't burn, so metal is the type to look for if your home is near bushland.
  • Plastic mesh is generally cheaper, but it will burn, so it's not a good choice in bushfire areas.
  • Finer mesh keeps out smaller debris, such as gum leaf pieces, seeds and embers, but needs brushing off more often, because fine material sits on top instead of washing through.

We fit metal mesh, aluminium or steel, in a colour to suit your roof. It comes with the manufacturer's product warranty, and most homes are done in a day, including the vacuum clean first.

Gutters and bushfire

Dry leaves in a gutter are an easy place for embers to land and catch. That's why the ACT Emergency Services Agency's bushfire checklist says to clean leaves from the roof, gutters and downpipes, and consider metal leaf guards.

That's why we fit metal mesh, not plastic. If your home backs onto bushland or grassland, keep the guards clear before each fire season. A guard keeps most leaves out of the gutter. It doesn't make a home fire-proof.

Guards cut the cleaning, they don't end it

We'd rather you heard this from us than found out later. No gutter guard keeps out everything. Fine debris, seeds and dust still get through the mesh, and leaves can settle on top of the guard, especially in valleys and on flatter roofs.

What changes is how often the gutters need attention, and how much there is to clear when they do. Keep an eye on the guards after a big leaf drop or a storm, and book a clean when you see build-up. Our guide to how often to clean gutters can help you decide.

What gutter guards cost

Gutter guard installation is quoted for each job. The length of your gutters, the roof type, the number of storeys and how easy the roof is to get onto all change the work. The vacuum clean before the guard goes on is part of the job.
