Gungahlin: new suburbs, deciduous streets
Gungahlin is Canberra's newest district. Palmerston, the first suburb, was gazetted in 1991, and its first house was finished in 1992. The suburbs north and east of it have been filling in ever since.
Its street trees are a different mix from older Canberra. In the ACT Government's tree records, about three in four Gungahlin street trees with a recorded type are deciduous: ornamental pears, ash, elms, zelkovas, oaks and planes. Only about one in five is a eucalypt. Tree cover is also the lowest of the five districts we've looked at, at about 14% of the land in 2020.
Townhouses are common here. In the 2021 Census, about one in five homes here was a townhouse, terrace or semi, and in Palmerston it was closer to two in five.
Every Gungahlin suburb also touches the ACT's bushfire prone area. Most of the land in Kenny and Jacka is inside it, as is more than half of Mitchell, and close to half of Casey, Crace and Taylor, mostly the reserves and grassland on their edges.
What that means for your gutters
Autumn is the big clean
Deciduous trees drop almost everything in one season, and ACT City Services counts the heavy leaf period as April to September. A clean in late autumn or early winter clears the year's main load in one go.
Townhouses work best as one booking
Shared rooflines mean one blocked gutter can overflow into the neighbour's wall. Booking a whole row or complex at once means every gutter is clear at the same time, so no one's overflow ends up on the next roof. We do strata and multi-unit sites, covered on our gutter cleaning page.
The edge suburbs need a spring check
If you're in Kenny, Jacka, Casey, Crace or Taylor, a clean in August or September, before bushfire season, keeps dry leaves out of the gutters in the months that matter.
Windows go with it
The same autumn leaves stick to glass and fill window tracks. Our guide to seasonal window cleaning covers what each season leaves on Canberra windows.

Frequently asked questions
Late autumn or early winter, once the street trees have dropped most of their leaves. Most Gungahlin street trees are deciduous types like ornamental pears, ash and elms, so the leaves come down in a rush between April and winter. If you live on the bushland edge, add a clean in August or September, before bushfire season starts on 1 October.
Yes. We can do a whole row or complex in one visit, and the vacuum lets us reach a lot of gutters from the ground. Strata managers and owners corporations can book the whole site; tell us how many units and storeys when you ask for a quote.
Yes. We clean windows outside with a water-fed pole and purified water, which reaches second-storey windows from the ground, and inside by hand. Many people book their windows and gutters together.
