Old streets, big trees
The inner south has some of Canberra's oldest streets. Much of Forrest and Barton was built in 1926 and 1927, following the Garden City planning that shaped early Canberra. Red Hill is among the leafiest suburbs in Canberra today.
Those trees are mostly the kind that drop everything in autumn. In the ACT Government's tree records, about three in five inner south street trees are deciduous, with oaks alone making up more than one in five, alongside ash, elms, cedars and pines.
The leaf load is big enough that ACT City Services sends extra street sweepers to Barton, Deakin, Forrest, Griffith, Kingston, Manuka, Narrabundah, Red Hill and Yarralumla through the heavy leaf period from April to September.
The inner south was also in the path of the January 2020 hailstorm. The Bureau of Meteorology recorded hail of 4 to 6 cm reaching the inner southern suburbs, and Griffith and Narrabundah were on NRMA's list of the worst-affected suburbs.
Homes here are a mix. Nearly half the dwellings in the inner south are flats or apartments, but Red Hill is about four in five houses.
Living under oaks and elms
Plan the clean for after the leaves
Under mature oaks and elms, gutters can go from clear to full in a few weeks of autumn. A clean in late autumn or early winter, once most leaves are down, is the one that counts here. If your gutters overflow in the first autumn storms, add an earlier clean in April or May.
Downpipes take the hit
Oak leaves are broad and flat, and they pack into gutter outlets. The ACT SES storm advice is to clean gutters, downpipes and drains regularly, and downpipe clearing is free with every gutter clean.
Look at the roof while you're up there
Big branches over old roofs, plus a history of hail, mean cracked and slipped tiles are worth catching early. Every gutter clean comes with a roof report, and we can usually do minor roof repairs straight away.
Apartments and box gutters
Flat-roofed blocks and older commercial buildings often have box gutters that hold water and grow plants if they're left. We clean them with the vacuum, covered on our gutter cleaning page.
Inner south suburbs we cover
We work in every inner south suburb: Red Hill, Griffith, Forrest, Deakin, Yarralumla, Narrabundah, Kingston and Barton, around Manuka and the Parliamentary Triangle in Parkes and Capital Hill, and out to the commercial buildings of Fyshwick.

Frequently asked questions
A lot. Around three in five inner south street trees are deciduous, mostly oaks, ash and elms, and City Services runs extra street sweeps here through the heavy leaf period from April to September. Gutters under those trees can fill in a few weeks of autumn.
Once most of the oak and elm leaves are down, usually late autumn or early winter. City Services treats April to September as the heavy leaf period in these suburbs. Under very big trees, a first clean in April or May stops the early leaves blocking the outlets.
Yes. We clean gutters and box gutters on apartment blocks and commercial buildings as well as houses. Tell us the number of storeys and how we get onto the roof when you ask for a quote.
