What Tuggeranong's gutters are up against
Tuggeranong is a district of houses. In the 2021 Census, nearly four in five homes here were separate houses, and Kambah, the first suburb, is closer to 85%. Building started in 1973, so the oldest of those houses, and their gutters, are now around 50 years old.
The streets are lined with gums. Of the street trees in the ACT Government's tree records that list a type, about three in four in Tuggeranong are eucalypts. Gums don't drop their leaves in one season the way oaks and elms do. They shed leaves and long strips of bark through the year, with the bark coming down mostly in summer.
Tuggeranong also sits on the bush. Every suburb in the district borders the ACT's bushfire prone area, and in Fadden, Macarthur, Bonython, Theodore, Conder and Gilmore more than half the suburb's land is inside it, mostly the reserves and hills around them. Kambah was among the suburbs reached by the 2003 fires, and in early 2020 the Orroral Valley fire came within about 6.4 km of Gordon.
Planning around gums and bushfire season
Gutters are a year-round job here
Under gums, there's no single "after the leaves fall" clean. Twice a year is the minimum, and homes with a big gum over the roof often need three or four.
Spring is the one that counts
Bushfire season in the ACT usually starts on 1 October. The ACT Emergency Services Agency's advice for homes is to clear leaves from the roof, gutters and downpipes, and dry gum leaves and bark are exactly what they mean. Book in late winter or early spring and it's done before the season starts.
Bark blocks downpipes
Long strips of gum bark jam in gutter outlets and the tops of downpipes. Downpipe clearing is free with every gutter clean.
Guards are worth a look on the bush edge
The ESA suggests metal leaf guards for homes near bushland. Our gutter guard page covers mesh options and how we fit them.
For the timing in more detail, our guide on how often to clean gutters has a full section on bushfire season.

At least twice a year, and more often if a big gum hangs over your roof. Gum trees drop leaves and bark through the year rather than all at once, so a clean in August or September, before bushfire season, and another after summer keeps on top of it.
