Belconnen was Canberra's first new town. Urban Belconnen began in June 1966, Aranda was the first suburb, and the first house blocks were sold in 1967. Today about seven in ten homes are separate houses, with townhouses and flats making up the rest, and the district runs from those first streets to the newest at Strathnairn and Macnamara.

It's gum country. About seven in ten Belconnen street trees with a type recorded in the ACT Government's tree records are eucalypts. City Services doesn't include Belconnen suburbs in its extra autumn leaf sweeps, even Florey, where some streets have mature oaks, so leaf clean-up falls to residents.

Belconnen took the worst of the January 2020 hailstorm. The Bureau of Meteorology recorded hail of 4 to 6 cm across the southern half of the district, and NRMA's three hardest-hit Canberra suburbs were Aranda, Florey and Latham, with Macgregor, Dunlop, Weetangera, Holt and Scullin also on its list. The storm broke windows and skylights as well as roof tiles.

The western edge borders bushland. Most of the land in Lawson, Macnamara, Strathnairn and Fraser is in the ACT's bushfire prone area, while interior suburbs such as Florey, Macquarie, Page and Scullin are outside it. Higgins, Hawker and Cook were reached by the 2003 fires.
