Queanbeyan's mix of old and new
Queanbeyan is older than Canberra. The local museum dates its proclamation as a township to 1838, and the town centre has the mix you'd expect: in the 2021 Census, fewer than half the homes in central Queanbeyan were separate houses, with the rest flats and townhouses, and Queanbeyan East was much the same.
Around it, the suburbs are almost all houses. About four in five homes in Karabar and in the Queanbeyan West and Jerrabomberra area are separate houses, and in Googong, where the first residents moved in in 2014, it's more than nine in ten.
Storms hit this side of the border hard. In January 2020, NRMA named Jerrabomberra the most storm-affected town or suburb in NSW. In April 2025 a hail shower hit Karabar, and the NSW SES took calls for water damage and blocked drains there and in Jerrabomberra. Its advice afterwards was to clear autumn leaves from drains and gutters and trim overhanging branches.
Several suburbs back onto bush. On the NSW bush fire prone land map, most of Greenleigh's land is bush fire prone, along with about two thirds of Jerrabomberra and more than half of Karabar. Central Queanbeyan and Crestwood are outside it.

The NSW SES advice after the 2025 hail was exactly that: autumn leaves out of gutters and drains. A clean in late autumn means storm water goes down the downpipes, not over the edge and into the eaves.
